Time Away From Your Business to Network with Other Successful Professionals
Although many of the managers in our membership are busy, it is important to remember the value that can be found in attending targeting networking events. One company that was able to 'see the forest through the trees' produces hardwood veneer took the time to attend an annual meeting. At a networking function they had dinner with a solid wood flooring manufacturer. During the conversation the flooring company mentioned that they had inquiries for a specific type of engineered floor that the veneer company could produce.
In the first year of working together, the veneer company has done over $240,000 in sales from their new found customer. Both parties told me they would never have known about each other if they had not been at a networking event such as their association's annual meeting.
Another reason to attend these events is to share solutions to common industry problems. One portion of the WPMA annual meeting is called 'Roll Call.' Each member stands, introduces themselves, their company, and what they supply or produce. The also share the most pressing problem their company faced in the prior year along with the solution to the problem. These items are recorded for the attendees to view during the session. By the end of the roll call many people are able to find out that they were not alone with their problem and that a fellow member may have discovered a better solution that can help their business.
Many people say that they can not take one or two days away from their business. The truth is, companies can NOT afford to miss these targeted networking opportunities. For 2014 the Wood Products Manufacturers Association is holding a joint meeting with the Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc. These companies produce quality Appalachian hardwood lumber and components. This is a perfect opportunity for companies to learn what future supplies and prices may be like, as well as the challenges these companies face. The AHMI members are interested to learn the challenges that secondary manufacturers in the country are faced with. If companies can come away with one concrete idea that can be implemented in their business, the time away from it will be well spent.
This will be taking place October 14 - 16, 2014 in Charlotte, NC. The deadline to make hotel reservations is September 13th. Please consider taking some time away from your business to attend this event.
